Flip flops are easy and comfortable to wear for activities that require little walking. These types of shoes are designed with inadequate support when they are worn for the majority of the day. This is a result of poor arch design, which can cause uncomfortable foot conditions to develop. Some of the signs that flip flops are being worn for long periods of time can include cracked heels, and the overall foot may feel tired. This can come from the toes constantly grasping the shoe to keep it from falling off. Additional dangers can include accidents to the feet, and it may be easier to sprain the ankle if falling occurs. Please consult with a podiatrist if you would like more information about what type of flip flops are better for the feet than others.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Jack A. Sasiene, DPM from Texas. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

Possible Causes Of Flat Feet

People that do not have an arch in their foot, or possibly a low arch, are said to have the medical condition that is known as flat feet. Most people are born with flat feet, and the arch typically develops after several years. Patients who have had a foot injury, have gained weight suddenly, or wear shoes that do not fit correctly may develop flat feet. Additionally, patients who have medical conditions that can include diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or who have suffered a stroke, may be prone to having flat feet. This ailment may cause the feet to feel achy for the majority of the time, and it can be difficult to accomplish daily activities. Mild relief may be found when gentle calf stretches are frequently practiced, and it may be beneficial to wear custom made orthotics in the shoes. If you have fallen arches, or flat feet, please speak with a podiatrist who can offer the best treatment options that are correct for you.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Jack A. Sasiene, DPM from Texas. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Possible Causes Of Stress Fractures

People who frequently participate in running and jumping activities may be prone to experiencing stress fractures. This is defined as a hairline fracture in the bones of the feet, and can worsen without prompt treatment. Many people choose to pay little attention to the dull ache stress fractures may cause, and will continue to pursue their chosen sport. Additionally, this condition may develop in patients who have nutritional deficiencies, or weak bones from existing medical conditions. Some of the symptoms that are generally associated with stress fractures can include swelling, pain that may diminish while resting, and the affected area may be painful to touch. If you feel you have developed a stress fracture, please speak with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can properly diagnose and treat this condition.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact Jack A. Sasiene, DPM from Texas. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.
